Chapter 39

Though uncertain and full of risks, there was no way Kerriah would stay back on the Thraxon frigate while Sergeant Alar and his ops team swept Plexo’s specially modified corvette-class ship. Besides, aside from Krath and Jesselle, she was the only person with them that had ever been onboard that flashy, bronze vessel. Before she stood to get a better view from the transport’s cockpit window, she looked back at Captain Ashton. As soon as she made it known she would be going with the team, he insisted he also needed to be there. To everyone else, his decision seemed like a courageous leader who would always put himself in harm’s way alongside those who reported to him. However, she knew the real reason why he had come.

“Where are you going, Kerriah?” Ashton asked with a smile.

She smiled back. “Well, not that I need to report everything I do to you, but I want a better look at what we’re dealing with.” She knew undermining his authority frustrated Ashton. But she also knew his affection for her allowed it to happen. Mature beyond her years due to her recent exploits, she was still relatively young and welcomed the subtle flirts. She enjoyed the game. It helped ground her thoughts and kept her from becoming overwhelmed with the dire tasks ahead. She needed it.

She stepped into the cockpit with Lieutenant Camden and his co-pilot. They hardly noticed her behind them as they stared at Eesolan in the distance. Kerriah tilted her head and squinted as she observed the planet. Luminars always guarded the secrecy of their home world, and as such, there were very few images of it floating around the UMO. The ones she recalled seeing were a white planet with blotches of black and swashes of golden tint lightly brushed across the surface. This version had long black bands feathering across its smoky face. Debris from broken orbiting stations and ships littered the outer reaches of the planet’s gravitational pull.

“This,” Kerriah’s voice was low and her words hesitant as she spoke, “this is Eesolan?”

“Yeah, or at least what’s left of it,” Camden said as he looked down for a second to adjust the transport’s scanning array.

She noticed both pilots kept looking nervously up. She took another step forward and stooped for a better view. Her eyes widened—a white beam connected from the planet to the base of an enormous object. The span of the onyx sickle's slender blades nearly matched in scale to Eesolan as it spun above the planet, slicing through the black void like a fan pushing nonexistent air through the world below.

“What the heck is that?” Her voice quivered, knowing this was what Creedith had warned of when they first arrived, but seeing it firsthand was creepier than she had imagined. It was challenging to keep her nerves pulled together. Everything was out of place here, and it felt more like they moved into a well-orchestrated trap with every passing minute.

“We have no idea,” Camden replied.
